How and why teenagers use technology

Understanding teenagers and technology can seem a little overwhelming. It sometimes seems like teenagers’ lives revolve around their phones and technology. From the internet and social media, to phones, apps, games, television and other types of technology, it’s easy to wonder whether it’s all too much. Technology is increasingly becoming an essential part of our lives, and many young people – often referred to as ‘digital natives’ – haven’t known it any other way.

Young people use the internet and social media to:

  • connect with, comment on and discuss things with others, through social networking, emailing and online messaging
  • find, create or share interesting photos, videos and articles
  • join or follow interest groups
  • play online games
  • learn more about topics that interest them
  • as a study tool for school.

Potential benefits of technology for teens

Young people love going online, for very good reason. By using the internet, they can:

  • easily access information to inform and educate themselves
  • maintain and develop supportive relationships
  • form their identities (through self-expression, learning and talking)
  • promote a sense of belonging and self-esteem through staying connected with friends and being involved in diverse communities.

Research shows that the things that help young people have a positive experience online are:

  • having a good understanding of the internet and how online media work (including things like privacy settings)
  • having the skills to critically understand, analyse and create content that adds value for themselves and others.

If young people understand what it means to be a good ‘digital citizen’, you have every reason to trust them with managing their own internet use, just as you trust them to act responsibly when they’re at school and out with friends.

Potential risks for teenagers

Potential risks online are closely related to issues young people can experience at school, at home and in the community. It’s important to remember that, just as teenagers need to have good boundaries and rules for offline behavior, and the guidance and morals to make good decisions, they also need these things to protect them when online.

Some risks associated with being online are:

  • Cyber bullying: This is when people use technology to embarrass, harass or bully someone. Cyber bullying can include posting mean or untrue statements, making fake online profiles intended to embarrass people, sharing embarrassing photos, and more.
  • Trolling: This is when people deliberately try to start arguments or to upset people on the internet, often causing considerable distress.
  • Isolation: Too much time spent online and using technology is time not spent face-to-face with family and friends, which can create barriers and contribute to a sense of isolation.
  • Inappropriate material: Teenagers posting inappropriate pictures or content online, or sharing such material with friends, may humiliate themselves or others.
  • Inappropriate relationships: Strangers or others may try to form inappropriate relationships with young people.

Being aware of these risks is the first step in helping your teenager to manage them.

How much time are young people spending on screen-based activity?

A 2011–12 study by the Australian Bureau of Statistics indicated that young people aged from 5 to 17 years spend, on average, just over 2 hours per day on screen-based activity, compared to 1.5 hours per day on physical activity. Just under half of 2- to 17-year-old’s had access to at least one type of screen (TV, computer, phone, etc.) in their bedrooms. For 15- to 17-year-old’s, this figure goes up to 75 per cent.

More recent statistics on teenage internet use (2014–15) indicate that 15- to 17-year-old’s:

  • spend an average of 18 hours per week online (just over 2 hours per day)
  • are most likely to use the internet for social networking (91 per cent), entertainment (73 per cent) and formal education activities (73 per cent).

What is a healthy limit to set for my teenager?

Two hours used to be the golden rule for the amount of screen time young people should be allowed per day. That’s now being revised because it just isn’t realistic in the modern world where technology is used for education and social networking, as well as for entertainment. It’s more important to set limits on recreational screen time, and to focus on the quality of what your children are doing on their devices.

Ask questions like:

  • Where is my child looking for information? How do they know it’s good quality?
  • What kind of games and apps is my child using?
  • Are they almost always using their screen time for distraction or procrastination?

These sorts of questions will help you find the line between healthy and unhealthy use of technology for your family.

It’s all about balance

All of us, especially young people, need to learn how to exercise moderation in the things we spend time on. Technology for teens is fun and allows them to stay connected to their friends and family, which is important. Some teenagers will do this by spending a lot of time connecting with their friends on social media, or by hanging out with other ‘gamer’s’ when playing multi-player games online. That’s okay!

But it’s important to support them to balance that with face-to-face time with people, and to make sure they leave enough time in their week for physical exercise, learning, and other types of play.

Find things to try to help your child with technology.

Top 5 Greatest NBA player of all time

Here is an attempt at solving one of the biggest controversies of all time – ranking the legendary players of the old school as well as the present class accTop 5 Greatest NBA player of all timeording to their greatness.

Now it goes without saying that these iconic players played in different generations with different rules and different technologies. So to compile a list consisting of all of them is no small task. It is all a matter of perspective and opinions, just like how incorrect it would be to rank players only on the basis of championships or the lack thereof.

But at the same time, someone who has not won a championship in his career, by unspoken consent can’t appear on this list. With this list, I have tried to compile a list of superstars with a healthy mix of all aspects taken together. Here goes!

#5 Kobe Bryant

NBA Finals Game 7: Boston Celtics v Los Angeles Lakers

Kobe Bryant has been an essential cog not just in basketball, but in all sports as an icon and ambassador of the 2000’s. His game style, aggression and popularity brought him to be known as the successor to MJ in the sport. He is now part of Lakers‘ folklore, getting them to 5 championships.

He is also the only player to have two jersey numbers retired by the same organization. But his not so glorious final years mean that he is no higher than number 10 on our list of elite and talented players of all time which is a significant achievement on its own.

#4 Larry Bird

NBA Finals: June 1986 - Boston Celtics v Houston Rockets

Another unquestioned and one of the most respected legends of the game, Larry Bird is a 3-time league MVP and a 3-time NBA Champion. Larry did not have the average NBA players’ athletic or high flying nature. What he lacked, he made up with his excellent basketball IQ and shooting ability.

He was a part of a two-way rivalry in the 80’s which made the NBA what it is today. Not many have ever been able to outshine his skills and shooting abilities at his height. From winning three-point contests to trash-talking his heart out, he had it all. He had a career shortened due to injury, and hence this place in this ranking. Otherwise, who knew what kind of records he would have broken!

#3 Bill Russell

Boston Celtics

With 11 NBA titles from 13 playing seasons, there is no one who can question the greatness of this man. He invented defensive sequences and made sure that defense was considered an equal force in an attack centered league.

Widely regarded as the best defensive player of all time, his 11 NBA championships is probably the safest all-time record around. He also has 5 MVP awards, all of this at a time when it was difficult to be an African-American in the city of Boston. Bill Russel didn’t just win in Basketball, he won in life.

#2 LeBron James

Cleveland Cavaliers v Boston Celtics - Game Five

LeBron James has been constantly building his case for the “Greatest of All Time”. He has easily cemented his place within the top 3 NBA players in any list. What is scary is that he produced one of his best statistical seasons in his 15th season. His four regular season and three finals MVP’s show his value to whichever team he is part of.

In pure raw skill sets and overall completeness, there isn’t any player greater than him. His lack of a greater number of championships is not a reason enough to place him any lower on this list. In his 8 straight NBA Finals appearances, he has faced three outstanding dynasties i.e Popovich’s Spurs, Kobe’s Lakers and the Golden State Warriors. No other player can claim to have played and won against three dynasties in their prime.

#1 Michael Jordan

Game 5 NBA Finals - Chicago Bulls v Los Angeles Lakers

There was no question that Air Jordan would end up on the first place on any all-time list. His aggressive nature, high flying dunks, wagging tongue, and the winning mindset is a legend in basketball.

In his 1988 season, he won the NBA MVP, the Defensive Player of the Year, as well as the scoring title. Need I say more? He is regarded as not just an icon of basketball, but of all sporting history. There has never been a player like him. Going 6 of 6 at the biggest stage (NBA Finals), and winning two three-peats with the Chicago Bulls, the evidence is plenty.

His championships have come against sides loaded with Hall of Famers. What he has done for the sport is unparalleled. Basketball would not be the same without him. He truly is the greatest of all time.
